Forza Horizon 6: What Developer_Direct Revealed — And What It Means for PC Players

We've had a few weeks now to digest everything from Xbox’s Developer_Direct, and we couldn’t be more excited about some of the announcements made, especially regarding a certain racing sim. Forza Horizon 6 was announced last year at the 2025 Tokyo Game Show, but outside of the game's setting being in Japan, there was very little known about what to expect. That is until Playground Games opened last week's showcase with a gameplay overview of the highly anticipated follow-up to 2021's critically acclaimed Forza Horizon 5. Familiar promises were made: a vast open world, stunning visuals, and effortless accessibility. However, the real question for sim racers and performance-focused PC players is how far Playground Games can push realism, responsiveness, and technical fidelity this time around?

What we know

Playground Games has made it clear this game isn’t just another sequel; it’s the most ambitious and visually spectacular entry in the series yet. Launching on May 19th for PC and Xbox, with a potential PS5 release later in the year, it promises a playground of neon-lit cities, winding mountain passes, and open-world car culture waiting to be explored. Forza Horizon has been a Microsoft flagship game for over a decade, so we know it no longer needs to prove itself. The challenge Playground Games faces is evolution. Forza Horizon 6 needs to push fidelity and scale without compromising the responsiveness that racing games demand, and thankfully we seem to be getting that, with emphasis clearly on fine-tuning rather than reinvention.

World Design & Exploration

Fans asked, and Playground Games listened; Japan has been “one of the most iconic and requested” locations for a Forza game, and for good reason. Developer_Direct really showed off the breathtaking scenery and landscapes on offer for players to explore. Bringing together the “stunning contrasts of rural and urban,” the map is set to be the largest to date, full of spectacular and diverse driving experiences. The world encourages exploration, whether chasing a hidden shortcut or stumbling upon a car meet, and to add to the immersion, we will apparently get to see Japan in all its seasons with changing landscapes, foliage and weather.

Progression & Legend Island

Unlike some of the more recent Forza Horizon games, 6 is set to return to a campaign and progression system more reminiscent of the first Forza Horizon, with a 'zero-to-hero' approach. Players start the game as a tourist at the Horizon Festival rather than an immediate superstar, working their way through the ranks with the campaign's focus being on the journey you take. Your placement within these ranks is indicated through a wristband that you receive at the end of each round after partaking in spectacular events such as the classic Horizon showcase and the new Horizon Rush, where you're given the chance to really show off your skills through an obstacle-course-like event.

The end goal for the campaign is to receive your gold wristband, which will then grant you access to Legend Island, an area exclusive to the best of the best with unique events, tracks, and locations. An achievement for many and a clear goal for long-time fans who want to prove their worth.

Cars & Multiplayer Innovations

And with the campaign, of course, comes the all-important roster of cars available. At its launch, Forza Horizon 6 will have more than 550 cars available for you to customise and collect—more than any previous Forza game! And with this announcement also came the unveiling of the game's cover cars: the 2025 GR GT Prototype (see above) and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. The GR GT is particularly exciting, bringing to the game the best and latest in the Japanese Domestic Market, with developers describing it as “a race-derived road car that combines motorsport performance with road-going excellence”.

And to show off your collection of cars, Forza Horizon 6 sees the return of shared car meets, as well as a trove of new open-world, multiplayer content to enjoy. Multiplayer features include Drag Meets, Horizon Time Attack Circuits and even Touge battles, which see you careening around the bends and twists of Japan’s mountain passes at night.

Performance & System Considerations

With Forza Horizon 6 introducing the largest and most densely populated world the series has seen, performance will be central to the experience. While current-gen consoles are definitely up to the task of running the game, will they run it at its best? If we reflect on the latest Forza game, Forza Motorsport, which initially had a rocky PC launch, the game ultimately scales up in comparison to the Series X, with improved resolutions, ray tracing, and anisotropic filtering. With this in mind and no set date for a PS5 launch, if you're looking for the full Forza racing experience, then a powerful PC and sim rig are the way to go.

With its vast open world, increased environmental density, and advanced lighting and weather systems, Forza Horizon 6 is clearly designed to scale with modern hardware, where we see graphic quality constantly being pushed to the limit. Gameplay is built around seamless transitions—from city sprints to mountain Touge battles—and fast storage is key to keeping that experience uninterrupted. The result is a world that feels continuously alive, with fewer interruptions and smoother transitions between events.
