Samsung’s brand new 980 PRO NVMe SSD is the first to utilise the new PCIe Gen.4 technology, available to AMDs Ryzen CPUs and supporting motherboards. The drive is touting unparalleled performance thanks to the aforementioned PCIe Gen.4 and is aimed at professionals and hardcore enthusiasts that want that next-generation performance in their storage.
Performance
The 980 PRO features a custom Elpis Controller, V-NAND and DRAM, all of which are custom designed at Samsung to eek every ounce of performance from PCIe 4.0. The 980 PRO claims stats as high as 7,000MB/s Sequential Read and 5,000MB/s Sequential Write speeds. Random Read and Write speeds peak at 1,000K IOPS, up to twice as fast as 3.0 SSDs and 12.7x faster than SATA SSDs.
Sequential Read: 7,000MB/s
Sequential Write: 5,000MB/s
Random Read: 1,000K IOPS
Random Write: 1,000K IOPS
This time around, Samsung has traded the traditional copper heatsinks with a nickel coating to control heat generated by the DRAM, Controller and V-NAND.
Capacities
The Samsung 980 PRO comes in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB flavours, ideal for the majority of heavy workloads and primary boot drive.
